The Rays put Jake Odorizzi on the mound today for his first start of 2017. Odorizzi was 10-6 last season with a 3.69 ERA and 1.19 WHIP while racking up 166 strikeouts with 54 walks. When it comes to the lineup, the Rays managed to pile up 13 hits. Logan Morrison had three hits while driving in three runs to lead the way. Evan Longoria also had three RBI as both men hit a long ball at home in the opener.
The Yankees have C.C. Sabathia on the mound today to try and get them their first win. C.C. is coming off a bit of a bounce-back year in 2016 where he was only 9-12, but had a 3.91 ERA with 152 strikeouts. His WHIP was a tad high at 1.32. The Yankees had nine hits in Sunday’s opener, but couldn’t get the big hit when needed. They stranded nine runners in the game. Starlin Castro and Chase Headley each had three hits in the loss.
The Rays got a big effort from Chris Archer on Sunday and they will need something similar today. Thankfully for Tampa, they should be able to get it from Odorizzi. The Yankees don’t have a lineup that should overpower him and the Rays can get some timely hitting once again against Sabathia, who doesn’t have his overpowering stuff like he did in the prime of his career.
