The pitching matchup for today puts the Yankees’ Jaime Garcia (1-1, 5.82 ERA) against the Mets’ Robert Gsellman (5-5, 6.16). Garcia is pitching for his third team in the last month after being traded from the Braves to the Twins, where he made one start before being dealt to the Yankees. He is an extreme groundball pitcher who has pitched two games for New York, throwing 10 2/3 innings and surrendering eight earned runs on 12 hits with 10 strikeouts and seven walks. The Yankees are 1-1 in the those games. Gsellman has shown flashes of being really good for the Mets but is still in the learning stages, with New York losing its last three games with him on the mound before he went on the disabled list June 27. This is his first start back, so don’t expect him to go deep in the game.
The Yankees won the first two games of this crosstown series in the Bronx, by scores of 4-2 and 5-4, while the remaining two games shift to Citi Field. The Yankees are 63-55 overall and 28-33 on the road, while the Mets are 53-64 and 26-32 at home.
In Tuesday’s game, the Yankees managed to figure out Mets starter Jacob deGrom for five runs on nine hits over 7 1/3 innings, while Sonny Gray was effective in allowing two earned runs through six. Jacoby Ellsbury and Gary Sanchez each homered in the victory for the Yankees. The Bronx Bombers held a 4-0 and 5-2 lead before the Mets made it interesting late off closer Aroldis Chapman, who tweaked his hamstring in the ninth inning.
Despite this game being in a pitcher’s park, there are many factors in play toward it going over. Garcia has been shaky in his own right recently, while Gsellman will likely show rust in his first MLB game in a month-and-a-half. Chapman is also probably out after his hamstring injury Tuesday.
