The starting pitchers for this game are Ubaldo Jimenez (5-7, 6.25 ERA) and Marco Gonzales (1-1, 6.48 ERA). Jimenez has been one of the worst starting pitchers in baseball this year, but he’s actually been in good form recently. The worst of his last four starts is his most recent as he gave up three earned runs on six hits with 11 strikeouts and a walk over 5 1/3 innings in a 5-4 loss at Oakland. He had won his previous two starts, allowing only a total of two earned runs over 12 2/3 innings with 12 strikeouts. Gonzales was acquired in July from the Cardinals in a trade for outfielder Tyler O’Neill. The left-hander has only made two starts for the Mariners, most recently giving up one earned run on four hits with no strikeouts and a walk over 4 1/3 innings in a 6-5 home loss to the Angels.
Baltimore won the opener in the series by an 11-3 final, while Seattle rebounded for a 3-1 win Tuesday. The Orioles are 59-61 overall and 24-38 away from home, while the Mariners are 60-61 with a 33-32 home record.
Tuesday’s game saw five strong innings from Seattle starter Andrew Albers, allowing one earned run over the first five innings before the bullpen took care of the rest. After Baltimore score in the top of the first inning, Albers settled down and the Mariners offense plated one in the fourth and a pair in the fifth off Wade Miley to assume control. Jean Segura paced Seattle by going 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Guillermo Heredia was also 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
Jimenez has righted the ship as of late and appears healthy after leaving his last start following a ball that was hit off his calf. He is often a difficult pitcher to trust, but he seems motivated to remain in the O’s rotation and make his overall season numbers look more respectable. Baltimore has struggled more against left-handed pitching this year than righties and Gonzales appeared more comfortable in his last start. There might not be as many runs as you think in this matchup. Take the under.
