On the mound for the Orioles will be Gabriel Ynoa (1-1, 4.29 ERA), while the Yankees turn to Luis Severino (12-6, 2.96). Ynoa is making his second start of the season and seventh appearance overall. He has a 1.40 WHIP with 15 strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings. Ynoa allowed three earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and no walks over 4 2/3 innings in a 4-2 loss at Cleveland in his first start on September 9. It was his first appearance on the road after five relief outings at home. Severino holds a 1.05 WHIP with 211 strikeouts in 176 1/3 innings. Over his last two starts at Texas and home against Boston, he’s given up a total of two runs (one earned) on three hits with 19 strikeouts and three walks over 13 innings. The Yankees won both games. Severino has a 3.83 ERA in 13 home starts.
Baltimore comes in with a 72-75 record and is 28-45 on the road, while New York is 80-66 and 41-27 at home. The Yankees have won seven of the last 10 meetings and the total has gone over in nine games.
Thursday’s game was won 13-5 by New York as Aaron Judge pounded two three-run home runs among his three hits. Jacoby Ellsbury was 1-for-2 with three walks and three runs scored. Gary Sanchez finished 2-for-4 with a home run, two runs and two RBIs. Todd Frazier was 2-for-3 with a home run, two walks and three RBIs. Clint Frazier went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and two runs. Masahiro Tanaka allowed two earned runs and struck out eight over seven innings to get the win. Chance Sisco was 2-for-2 with a home run off the bench for the Orioles. Trey Mancini was 2-for-5 with a home run and two runs scored. Jonathan Schoop contributed a solo home run. Wade Miley was shelled for six earned runs in 0 1/3 innings to take the loss.
Severino has been lights out a lot this year and is pitching particularly well right now, especially considering his last two outings have been at ballparks that heavily favor hitting. Ynoa is another pitcher Yankees bats should feast on. This game could get ugly, just like last night’s did.
