The starting pitcher matchup will be Eduardo Rodriguez (4-4, 4.19 ERA) for the Red Sox and CC Sabathia (10-5, 3.82) for the Yankees. Rodriguez has a 1.24 WHIP with 114 strikeouts in 105 1/3 innings. He allowed five earned runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts and a walk in his last start, a 7-0 home defeat against the Orioles. Sabathia carries a 1.26 WHIP with 90 strikeouts in 115 1/3 innings. He gave up one earned run on five hits with six strikeouts and a walk over seven innings in a 2-1 home loss to the Mariners his last outing. He has dominated Boston this year, winning all three of his starts and posting a 0.90 ERA in 20 innings.
Boston is 76-57 on the season and 36-32 on the road, while New York is 70-62 and 37-26 at home. The Red Sox have won six of the last 10 meetings and the total has gone under six times.
On Wednesday, Boston completed a three-game sweep at Toronto with a 7-1 victory. Rick Porcello threw 6 2/3 innings to get the win, allowing one earned run on six hits with seven strikeouts and two walks. Mitch Moreland keyed the offense as he went 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBIs. Hanley Ramirez was 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs. Xander Bogaerts added a double, a walk, a run and an RBI. New York was swept at home by Cleveland, losing Wednesday’s game 9-4. Jordan Montgomery suffered the loss as he allowed four earned runs in four innings. Aaron Hicks was 4-for-4 with a run. Greg Bird was 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs.
Boston is rolling into this series, while New York is stumbling. But this is baseball, where your momentum is only as good as your next day’s starting pitcher. Sabathia has tamed Boston three times and we’ll say he makes it a fourth Thursday night.
