Yanks’ Now 11/2 After Stanton Trade
While the trade isn’t official yet, there are reports that the Yankees have acquired slugger Giancarlo Stanton from the Marlins. What did the trade do for the Bombers’ World Series odds?
According to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv, the Yankees are now 11/2 to win the 2018 World Series following Saturday’s Stanton trade news. The Bombers were 8/1 to win it all before the acquisition and are now co-favorites with the Dodgers to win next season’s Fall Classic.
Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports that the Marlins will receive Starlin Castro, Jorge Guzman and Jose Devers in the Stanton trade. As expected, the Yankees are also taking on most of Stanton’s salary and the Marlins are getting much in return for prospects. This is essentially a pure salary dump.
Guzman, 21, has a great arm and came to the Yankees in the trade that sent Brian McCann to the Astros. He went 5-3 with a 2.30 ERA, a 1.04 WHIP and an 88/18 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 66 2/3 innings in 13 starts at Low-A Staten Island in 2017.
As for Devers, he’s an 18-year-old shortstop who slashed .245/.336/.342 in Rookie Ball last season. He is the cousin of Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers.
The Yankees now have two of the best sluggers in all of baseball, as Stanton joins an outfield that already features Aaron Judge. The Yankees advanced to the American League Championship Series a year ago before they were ousted by the Astros. New York still needs to address its starting rotation but the Yankees have one of the most potent offenses that the league has ever seen, as well as a dominant bullpen. Good luck, baseball.
As for the Marlins, they were an 80/1 long shot to win the World Series with Stanton. They’re now 100/1 to win it all and might not be done trading assets. Christian Yellich and Marcell Ozuna could be next to be dealt.
