Yanks, Tigers Split While Chi-Sox Gain Ground in The AL Race
The Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees each took a victory away Wednesday from their day-night Double-header.
New York took the first game on a 2-0 shut out and it appeared as if they would take the night cap as well. That was until Craig Monroe came to bat in the ninth inning with two on and Detroit trailing 2-3. Monroe took the first pitch out of the park and put the Tigers on top 5-3 preventing New York from sweeping the day-night affair and only losing a half a game to the White Sox who now trail Detroit by 4.5 games.
Chicago rallied in the eighth inning of their game against the Devil Ray’s to pull out a 5-4 victory. Minnesota however lost against the Royals to drop to 6 games back of the Tigers.
After a red hot July, the Tigers will be happy to get out of August. The Tigers were 15-10 in July and batting .294. In August however they are 13 of 15 and only batting .267. With only about a month left in the regular season Detroit needs a strong September to hold off the charging White Sox.
Detroit will finish up their series against the Yankees today in a matinee at Yankee Stadium. Detroit is expected to start Jeremy Bonderman while New York plans on sending the "Big Unit", Randy Johnson to the hill.
Chicago will be trying to gain some more ground today against Tampa Bay while Minnesota will try to keep from losing more ground when they play Kansas City.
