ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -The Los Angeles Angels placed left fielder Garret Anderson on the 15-day disabled list Friday because of a tear in his right hip flexor tendon.
The move is retroactive to April 28, the day after Anderson hurt himself running out a grounder against the Chicago White Sox. Anderson had an MRI exam Friday, with results showing the tear. He could miss up to a month.
Anderson is hitting .263 with one homer and 10 RBIs in 23 games this season.
In 2004, one season after being named All-Star MVP and home run derby champ, Anderson went on the disabled list for the first time in his career because of arthritis in his upper back, neck and shoulders. He also missed some time in 2005 because of lower back irritation and tendinitis in his left knee. He had problems last season with plantar fasciitis in his left foot.
“The last couple of years have certainly taken a bit of a toll on Garret,” manager Mike Scioscia said. “I know it’s been tough on Garret to miss so much time. Outside of the last couple of years, he’s been in there virtually every day. Hopefully he’s going to get back in a reasonable amount of time and stay strong for the rest of the year and do the things on the offensive side that we need.”
To replace Anderson on their roster, the Angels recalled outfielder Tommy Murphy from Triple-A Salt Lake.
Murphy returns to the Angels for his second stint with the team. He played in three games for them last month, going hitless in two at-bats before being optioned to Salt Lake on April 24. He played in eight games for the Bees, hitting .345 with eight RBIs and four stolen bases.
