MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -Still recovering Saturday from arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, Twins manager Ron Gardenhire was unable to make it to the dugout for the second straight game.
“I don’t want to be on national TV with a machine hooked up to my knee,” Gardenhire said before Minnesota hosted the Detroit Tigers.
After having the operation Friday and monitoring the game that night from his office, Gardenhire was resigned to the same setup Saturday. Though he made it down to the field before batting practice and reported that he felt better than the day before, Gardenhire was still hurting.
Every 20 minutes or so, he was supposed to wrap his knee in a cold compression device – which would have been difficult to arrange in the dugout.
Third base coach Scott Ullger is in charge when Gardenhire isn’t, but the manager said he planned to be back in his usual seat for Sunday night’s game. The Twins are reeling, having lost nine of their last 12 games, and Gardenhire was trying to keep the mood from growing dark.
“They need me. I can say that,” he said, jokingly.
