CHASING AARON
Barry Bonds hit his 744th career home run in San Francisco’s 9-4 victory over Philadelphia on Saturday, moving him within 11 of Hank Aaron’s record of 755. Bonds led off the second inning and sent the first pitch from Jon Lieber over the fence in center for his 10th homer of the year, a drive that traveled an estimated 438 feet. It was the fifth time in his career he connected against Lieber.
ALMOST PERFECT
Always unflappable, Chien-Ming Wang was nearly unhittable. Almost perfect, in fact. Wang carried his bid for a perfect game into the eighth inning before Ben Broussard homered with one out, leading the New York Yankees over the Seattle Mariners 8-1 Saturday. Wang, who was trying for the 16th perfect game since 1900, ended up giving up two hits over eight innings for his first win of the year.
STREAKS
Derrek Lee extended his hitting streak to 13 games in a 5-3 win over Washington and has reached base safely in all 28 of the Cubs’ games. The Nationals have lost four straight. … Johan Santana has lasted at least five innings in 98 consecutive starts after pitching five innings in a 2-1 win over Boston. … Miguel Cabrera stretched his hitting streak to 10 games in an extra inning loss to San Diego. … Tim Hudson gave up three runs in eight innings in Atlanta’s 6-3 loss to Los Angeles and has lasted at least seven innings in each of his first six starts. He hasn’t allowed more than three runs in any start. Edgar Renteria extended his hitting streak to 14 games. … Jeff Suppan, who lost his first two starts of the year, won his fifth straight start in Milwaukee’s 6-3 win over Pittsburgh. … Toronto has now lost five straight following an 11-4 loss to Texas.
SNAPPED
Albert Pujols had a 12-game hitting streak snapped in a 13-0 loss to Houston. … The White Sox snapped a five-game losing streak with a 6-3 win over the Angels and haven’t lost more than five straight games since a seven-game skid in August 2005. … Baltimore had gone 16 games without scoring more than seven runs before beating Cleveland 8-2. … Tim Hudson had gone 44 1-3 innings without giving up a homer before surrendering one to Wilson Betemit in the eighth inning Saturday night. … Huston Street hadn’t allowed a home run in 52 appearances, dating back to last June 24, before Ty Wigginton hit one off of him in the ninth inning Saturday.

1917 – Babe Ruth of the Red Sox allowed two hits as he outdueled Walter Johnson of the Washington Senators 1-0. Ruth knocked in the winning run with a sacrifice fly.
1922 – Jesse Barnes of the New York Giants pitched the only no-hitter of the year, beating the Philadelphia Phillies 6-0.
1925 – Pittsburgh shortstop Glenn Wright made an unassisted triple play in the ninth inning against the St. Louis Cardinals when he caught Jim Bottomley’s line drive, stepped on second to double Jimmy Cooney, and tagged Rogers Hornsby coming from first.
1957 – Cleveland pitcher Herb Score was hit on the right eye by a line drive off the bat of Gil McDougald in the first inning. The ball broke Score’s nose and damaged his eye; he missed the rest of the season.
1959 – A crowd of 93,103 came to the Los Angeles Coliseum on “Roy Campanella Night” to show its affection for the paralyzed Dodger catcher. The Dodgers were beaten by the New York Yankees 6-2 in an exhibition game that followed the ceremonies.
1960 – Norm Sherry, a replacement catcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers, hit a home run in the 11th inning to give his brother, relief pitcher Larry Sherry, a 3-2 triumph over the Philadelphia Phillies in Los Angeles.
1997 – The Montreal Expos scored 13 runs to set an NL record for runs in a sixth inning during their 19-3 win over the San Francisco Giants. Montreal added five runs in the fifth to set a National League record for runs in consecutive innings with 18.
