WASHINGTON (AP) -Randy Johnson threw a bullpen session Friday at Chase Field in Phoenix and is on schedule to make a minor league start Sunday as he works to join the Arizona Diamondbacks after offseason back surgery.
The five-time Cy Young Award winner did some fielding practice and bunting, too.
“Everything went well,” manager Bob Melvin said before Arizona’s game at the Washington Nationals.
Johnson is slated to pitch for Class-A Visalia on Sunday, then for Triple-A Tucson on April 13. What hasn’t been announced is when Johnson will make his regular-season debut with Arizona.
“We’ve put a lot of thought into it. We’re not sure yet,” Melvin said.
“We’ve looked at several different places, but until we get through this, I really don’t want to say what day. Maybe after next time, if everything goes well, we’ll look to see what the plan is,” Melvin added. “But right now, I don’t want to commit to a day.”
