SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -Barry Bonds hit his 739th career home run Saturday, connecting for a leadoff shot in the second inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The 42-year-old San Francisco slugger moved within 17 homers of breaking Hank Aaron’s career record of 755 with his fifth homer of the season.
Bonds fouled off the first pitch of the inning against Edgar Gonzalez, a ball that landed just out of the reach of third baseman Chad Tracy. Bonds then hit the next ball well over the center-field fence. There was no doubt it would clear the fence and the scoreboard flashed “739” before the ball even landed.
It was his second homer in five career at-bats against Gonzalez.
