ATLANTA (AP) -The Atlanta Braves placed reliever Chad Paronto on the 15-day disabled list Saturday and sent left-hander Macay McBride to the minors to deal with control problems.
Paronto hobbled off the field Friday night during the seventh inning of an 11-4 loss to Florida. He strained a muscle near his groin while throwing a pitch.
McBride, who was expected to serve in a setup role out of the bullpen, walked 11 batters in his first three innings of work. He was sent to Triple-A Richmond to work on his mechanics.
Atlanta recalled right-hander Peter Moylan and lefty Steve Colyer to fill the openings on their 12-man staff.
McBride had no complaints about his demotion.
“I didn’t throw the ball like I needed to,” he said. “I need to go and fix things. In spring training, I came out firing and I haven’t done it here. I need to go to Richmond and straighten things out.”
McBride said it’s just a matter of adjusting his footwork so he can throw across his body.
“It’s something very simple, but it’s tough to work on it here when you’re trying to win,” he said.
The 24-year-old McBride went 4-1 with a 3.65 ERA last season. He had some control problems – 32 walks in 56 2-3 innings – but nothing like the start to this year.
“I think I’ll be all right,” he said. “I’m going to go fix it and I’ll be back.”
