RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. (AP) -Los Angeles Angels right-hander Bartolo Colon pitched four scoreless innings for Class-A Rancho Cucamonga on Thursday night while working his way back from a torn rotator cuff that sidelined him for the final two months of last season.
The 2005 AL Cy Young winner threw 61 pitches, 41 for strikes, and allowed a hit and a walk. He struck out five and departed with a 1-0 lead over Lake Elsinore in the Quakes’ regular-season opener.
His fastball was clocked up to 95 mph, and Angels director of player development Tony Reagins said it was an encouraging outing, adding, “You could tell his adrenaline was pumping. He has good control and was able to maintain his velocity.”
Colon is scheduled to pitch again for them on Tuesday, this time with a 75-pitch limit, before making what he and the Angels hope will be a final rehab start with Triple-A Salt Lake on April 15 in Las Vegas.
Colon was 1-5 with a 5.11 ERA in 10 starts last season after winning a career-high 21 games the previous year. The 33-year-old right-hander was on the DL from April 19 to June 17 with an inflamed right shoulder.
Angels teammate Jered Weaver takes the mound for Rancho Cucamonga on Friday night. The right-hander began the season on the 15-day disabled list because of tendinitis in his right biceps.
