NEW YORK (AP) -Yankees center fielder Johnny Damon wasn’t in the starting lineup Saturday against the Seattle Mariners after he cramped up during his last at-bat in the series opener.
Damon popped out in the ninth inning of the Yankees’ 15-11 loss Friday night and pulled up running out of the batter’s box. His right calf cramped up and Yankees manager Joe Torre opted to leave him out of the lineup.
“I just decided since he did it late in the game last night that I’d rather not start with him and if I need him later I’ll use him,” Torre said.
Damon missed some time earlier this season with a mild strain in his right calf that he originally thought was a cramp.
“I stretched a lot after that and that didn’t help it,” Damon said, “so I’m not stretching it now.”
Melky Cabrera replaced Damon in center field and at the top of the lineup.
