ST. LOUIS (AP) -Ken Griffey Jr. was a late lineup scratch from the Cincinnati Reds’ lineup on Thursday because of soreness in his chest.
A team spokesman did not know whether the injury was related to inflammation of the colon – a medical condition known as diverticulitis – that caused Griffey to miss four recent starts.
Griffey returned to the lineup Tuesday and hit his first home run of the season and 564th of his career, passing Reggie Jackson for 10th place on the career list.
Josh Hamilton replaced Griffey in right field and Jeff Conine, who had been batting third, moved into Griffey’s cleanup slot.
Griffey was batting .254 with one homer and nine RBIs.
