Hardy, Reimold power Orioles to 6-3 victory over Red Sox

 

BOSTON (AP) J.J. Hardy, Nolan Reimold and Jonathan Schop homered as the Baltimore Orioles beat Boston 6-3 on Tuesday to pull within two games of the Red Sox at the top of the American League East division.
The Orioles also moved into a tie with Toronto for the AL wild-card lead.
Orioles rookie Dylan Bundy (9-5) survived a rocky second inning and pitched into the sixth, holding Boston to three runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings. Zach Britton pitched a scoreless ninth for his 42nd save.
Toronto’s struggles continued, meanwhile, with a 6-2 loss to Tampa Bay.
Ramirez hit a three-run homer off Marcus Stroman in the fifth and Alexei Ramirez and Steven Souza Jr. also went deep for the Rays.
Toronto is 3-8 in September.
In St. Louis, Brandon Moss broke out of a lengthy slump with a tiebreaking home run and Aledmys Diaz connected in his return to the starting lineup, leading the Cardinals over the Chicago Cubs 4-2.
St. Louis remained a half-game behind the New York Mets for the second National League wild-card spot.
The Cardinals also ensured that the runaway Cubs won’t clinch the NL Central division at Busch Stadium. Chicago’s magic number is three, and the series in St. Louis wraps up Wednesday.
In New York, Jacoby Ellsbury and Didi Gregorius came off the bench and hit back-to-back homers in the seventh inning, sending the Yankees over the NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers 3-0.
Gary Sanchez added a leadoff home run in the eighth as New York stayed two games behind in the AL wild-card race.
The Mets, meanwhile, topped Washington 4-3 in 10 innings for their eighth win in the last 10 games.
T.J. Rivera hit his first major league home run, connecting for the Mets in the 10th off Washington closer Mark Melancon.
The Mets are even with the Giants and a half-game ahead of St. Louis in the NL wild card race.
Taijuan Walker pitched a three-hitter for his first career shutout as Seattle won its season-high seventh straight, beating the Los Angeles Angels 8-0.
Walker (6-10) was perfect through 5 2/3 innings before Kaleb Cowart reached on a throwing error, and Kole Calhoun ended Walker’s no-hit bid with a leadoff single in the seventh inning.
Walker matched a career high with 11 strikeouts in his first complete game since July 2015.
In Houston, Jurickson Profar hit a tiebreaking single and AL West-leading Texas rallied for two runs in the ninth inning to beat the Astros 3-2.
The Rangers improved to 15-3 against Houston this year. The Astros are 4 1/2 games back in the wild-card chase.
Minnesota’s Jorge Polanco homered and drove in four runs as the Twins routed Detroit 8-1.
The Tigers lost for just the third time in 14 games against Minnesota, costing them precious ground in a crowded race for the second AL wild card.
Miami’s Ichiro Suzuki scored two runs and drove in another in the 900th multi-hit game of his career as the Marlins boosted their fading wild-card hopes with a 7-5 win over Atlanta.
Miami is five games out of a playoff spot.
San Diego’s Ryan Schimpf hit a three-run homer with two outs in the ninth as the Padres topped San Francisco 6-4, preventing the Giants from gaining ground on the Dodgers.
The Giants remain four games behind Los Angeles for the NL-West division lead and level with the Mets in the wild-card race.
