TORONTO (AP) -The Toronto Blue Jays plan to place reliever Brandon League on the 15-day disabled list within a few days.
“He’s not ready to pitch so we’re just going to back him up, put him on the DL and let him work his way back,” Blue Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi said after Thursday night’s 5-4 loss to Detroit.
The 24-year-old right-hander was unavailable through much of spring training because of pain in his shoulder. When League finally resumed throwing, he had lost more than 10 mph off his fastball. He was assigned to Triple-A Syracuse but remained at extended spring training in Dunedin, Fla., to work on his mechanics.
League went 1-2 with a 2.53 ERA in 33 games last season and had been expected to work as the eighth-inning setup man this year.
Jason Frasor has become the eighth-inning setup man in League’s absence and has allowed just one hit and struck out seven in five appearances.
