SEATTLE (AP) -The Seattle Mariners bolstered their bullpen on Sunday, acquiring right-hander Jason Davis from the Cleveland Indians for a player to be named.
Davis has appeared in eight games this season and has no record with a 4.76 ERA for the Indians. He has spent his entire career in the Indians organization and was 3-2 with a 3.74 ERA in 39 games last year.
Davis has appeared in 114 major league games and made 52 starts, but Seattle manager Mike Hargrove said the plan at this time is to use Davis exclusively as a reliever. Davis is expected to join the Mariners during their series against the Angels beginning on Tuesday.
“He was very effective last year after being moved full-time to the bullpen and his ability to work long or short,” Mariners’ general manager Bill Bavasi said.
Hargrove is familiar with Davis from when he worked for the Indians during the 2004 season. Hargrove saw Davis pitch with both the Indians and at Triple-A Buffalo.
“He’s a big guy and throws the ball hard. I don’t think you can get too many power guys in your bullpen,” Hargrove said. “I think he’s going to be a big help for us.”
