PITTSBURGH (AP) -Florida Marlins right fielder Jeremy Hermida, out all season with a deep bone bruise on his right knee, was reinstated Monday from the disabled list and started against Pittsburgh.
Hermida spent the weekend on a rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Albuquerque, going 1-for-5 with two RBIs in two games. In an earlier rehab assignment at Class-A Jupiter, he was 4-for-12 with two homers and five RBIs in three games.
The 23-year-old Hermida, the Marlins’ top draft pick in 2002, was limited to 99 games in 2006 because of a hip flexor injury early in the season and a right ankle stress fracture in September.
Manager Fredi Gonzalez plans to start the left-handed hitting Hermida immediately, even though the Pirates will start three left-handers in the four-game series that ends Thursday.
“If he’s going to be our guy, he’s going to be our guy and he’s going to play,” Gonzalez said.
Hermida hit only .057 (2-for-35) during spring training after having a .251 average with five homers and 28 RBIs in 307 at-bats last season. In 2005, he hit .293 with four homers and 11 RBIs in 41 at-bats.
The Marlins weren’t required to make a roster move Monday to make room for Hermida since newly acquired right-hander Byung-Hyun Kim had not arrived after being acquired from Colorado for reliever Jorge Julio. The Marlins must make a move when Kim arrives, probably on Tuesday.
