WASHINGTON (AP) -The Marlins put rookie reliever Henry Owens on the 15-day disabled list Friday because of tendinitis in his right rotator cuff, the latest Florida pitcher to be sidelined.
“I don’t know really how it happened. It’s probably something that just came along with an over-use thing maybe,” said Owens, who told pitching coach Rick Kranitz after Tuesday’s game that he felt discomfort in his shoulder with every throw.
“It’s frustrating, because you want to be out there and help your team win games,” Owens said. “It’s definitely going to be tough, every day that goes by, knowing you can’t help your team.”
Five other Marlins pitchers are out with injuries, including starters Josh Johnson and Anibal Sanchez.
Owens’ move was retroactive to Wednesday. Outfielder John Gall was selected from Triple-A Albuquerque.
Owens, who became the Marlins’ closer after newcomer Jorge Julio lost the job, was 2-0 with four saves in five chances. He had a 1.96 ERA in 17 games.
“It’s probably the workload in April and early May,” manager Fredi Gonzalez said. “I’m not alarmed.”
Entering a weekend series at Washington, the Florida bullpen had blown six saves and ranked first in the majors with 130 innings.
Gonzalez said several relievers could step in to close games during Owens’ absence.
As for Julio, the manager said he’d prefer to use him in one or two non-save situations before using him at the end of a game.
“He’s the guy we want. The guy’s got experience to do it but we’ve got to build confidence in him,” Gonzalez said.
