NEW YORK (AP) -Hideki Matsui left the New York Yankees’ game against Baltimore on Saturday with a strained left hamstring.
Matsui hit a squibber in the second inning, then was pinch hit for in the fourth by Miguel Cairo, who took over in left field the next inning – just his fifth outfield appearance since 2003. New York already is short on outfielders, with Johnny Damon still recovering from a strained right calf.
After playing in 1,768 consecutive games with the Yomiuri Giants (1,250) and the Yankees (518), Matsui was sidelined from May 11 to Sept. 12 last year with a broken left wrist.
