CINCINNATI (AP) -Pittsburgh right fielder Xavier Nady accidentally knocked Adam Dunn’s fly ball over the wall for a two-run homer in the first inning Saturday, then stood with his hands on his hips in disbelief over his gaffe.
Dunn’s high fly got caught in the swirling wind and drove Nady within a step of the green-padded wall. Nady reached for the ball, which smacked the middle of his glove and then deflected into the first row of seats, hitting a gray-coated man wearing a Reds cap.
Nady dropped his head and put his hands on his hips while Dunn circled the bases on his third homer of the season. The distance was announced as 369 feet – an accurate guess, given that the ball landed in the seats by the 370-foot sign.
Dunn broke into a disbelieving smile when he reached the dugout and was congratulated by teammates.
It wasn’t quite as bad as Jose Canseco’s famous fielding gaffe. A fly ball bounced off his head and over the wall for a home run during a game in Cleveland.
