CHICAGO (AP) -Washington Nationals starter John Patterson left Saturday’s game against the Chicago Cubs in the third inning with a sore right biceps.
Patterson had given up a homer and two singles and had a 3-1 count on the fourth hitter of the inning, Matt Murton, before a trainer went to check on the right-hander. Patterson left the game and was replaced by Levale Speigner.
Patterson made only eight starts in 2006 because of nerve problems in his right elbow and had surgery last July. On Friday, he was hit in the left cheek by a foul ball during batting practice Friday at Wrigley Field, but precautionary tests were negative.
The Cubs led 2-0 when Patterson departed, but Speigner completed a walk to Murton to load the bases and then walked Mark DeRosa, Chicago starter Rich Hill and Ryan Theriot to force in three runs. Patterson gave up seven hits and was charged with five runs in his two-innings plus.
