The move allows both to get two days of rest because the Athletics are off Monday. … C Jason Kendall also had a scheduled day off. BOSTON: Manager Terry Francona argued with umpires twice during a 4-3 victory over the Twins. The first time came in the sixth inning when plate umpire Tim Tschida ruled that Dustin Pedroia did not score before Alex Cora was thrown out at second base on a flyout by David Ortiz to end the inning. Despite what might have appeared as a baserunning mistake by Cora that cost the Red Sox a run, Francona said he was not upset at the shortstop for being aggressive. “It’s heads-up baserunning as always,” Francona said. “He’s thinking all the way. It’s not like it was a brain cramp. He’s always trying to do the right thing.” … Pedroia’s three hits were a career high. “His approach was softer,” Francona said. “He’s taking the kind of swings that we think he can take. That was terrific.”

DETROIT: Reliever Joel Zumaya had an appointment Monday in New York with hand specialist Dr. Charles Melone. Zumaya was put on the DL on Saturday night with what is described as a sprain of the right middle finger of his right hand. The finger was swollen and bandaged Sunday and, he said, very painful. … The Tigers’ four home runs, 13 runs and 17 hits were all season highs. The previous best for runs was 12, on April 16 against the Royals. Detroit last had four homers in a game on Sept. 18, 2006, against the Chicago White Sox.
KANSAS CITY: The Royals had not allowed three home runs in an inning since June 28, 2006, at Cincinnati. Before giving up the three two-run shots in the second inning, Zack Greinke had allowed only two homers in 30 2-3 innings. … Tony Pena Jr. has hit in a career-best seven straight games and is batting .333 during the streak. … Mark Grudzielanek has hit in a season-high eight straight games. … With runners in scoring position, Mike Sweeney is 11-for-27. … Reliever John Bale had a setback in his rehab work at Double-A Wichita and will probably not be available until mid-July, manager Buddy Bell said.

He was 1-for-3 with a homer and a walk Sunday. … Before allowing home runs to Mark Teixeira and Kenny Lofton, RHP A.J. Burnett had allowed only one extra-base hit (also a homer) against left-handed hitters in his six previous starts this season. Burnett allowed three homers, the third time in his career he has done that.
TEXAS: RHP Kameron Loe allowed one run over 6 2-3 innings, the fifth straight quality start by a Rangers starter. Texas starters had only three quality starts the previous 14 games. … 1B Mark Teixeira has a five-game hitting streak (9-for-19), his longest of the season. … Teixeira is only five games shy of matching the Rangers record of 482 consecutive games played, held by Alex Rodriguez. … Texas is 4-6 in day games after a 3-2 victory over Toronto, which started a stretch of five daytime starts in its next eight games.

LOS ANGELES: All three home runs reliever Scot Shields has allowed this season – including pinch-hitter A.J. Pierzynski’s tying, two-run shot on Sunday – have blown leads for the Angels. Travis Hafner’s three-run shot on April 12 gave Cleveland a 4-2 lead. Ben Broussard’s pinch-hit grand slam on April 21 put Seattle ahead 7-6. … RHP Bartolo Colon took a three-hit shutout into the eighth inning, then allowing two more hits before leaving after 87 pitches with a mild strain in his right biceps. “We’ll take it day to day with Bart and see how it feels,” manager Mike Scioscia said. “I think there’s as much chance he’ll make his next start as he won’t.” … CF Gary Matthews Jr., the only player to start in each of the team’s first 31 games and play every inning, got the day off.

SAN DIEGO: OF Brian Giles sat out Sunday after starting the first 30 games. “It was just time,” manager Bud Black said. 1B Adrian Gonzalez is now the only player on the team to start every game. … RHP Clay Hensley, on the 15-day DL with a right groin strain, threw before Sunday’s game. “His arm feels good,” Black said. “He played some long toss, stretched it out a little bit. … Hopefully within the week he might be able to throw a light bullpen if everything continues to improve.” … The Padres’ 13 singles Saturday without an extra-base hit against Florida were the most hits they’ve had without an extra-base hit since June 11, 1994.
FLORIDA: Padres manager Bud Black came out of the weekend series at Florida with a souvenir: a shoe from Dontrelle Willis. As Friday’s game was about to start, Black asked the umpire crew about white striping on Willis’ shoes. “I wanted to make sure it was the same shoe he threw in all season,” Black said. The umpires determined the shoes were legal. Willis later sent an autographed shoe to Black, who displayed it on his desk. … Marlins pitchers went 0-for-1 with a walk Sunday, dropping their average to .237. They’re hitting better than center fielder Alfredo Amezaga (.235), second baseman Dan Uggla (.231) and right fielder Joe Borchard (.212).

WASHINGTON: RHP John Patterson went on the DL after Sunday’s 4-3, 10-inning loss to the Chicago Cubs because of elbow inflammation and could miss at least a month, manager Manny Acta said. Although an MRI exam Sunday revealed no structural damage, Patterson was told he has fluid and inflammation in his elbow. He left in the third inning of Saturday’s start after reporting pain in his right biceps. After making only eight starts in 2006 because of nerve problems in his right elbow and undergoing surgery last July, Patterson is 1-5 with a 7.47 ERA. “I didn’t want to spend one day on the DL this year,” said Patterson, who also was hit in the left cheek by a foul ball during batting practice Friday at Wrigley Field. “That was probably the No. 1 goal coming into the season. But there comes a point where you have to do what you have to do. I pushed it as far as I could push it for as long as I could push it.” … The Nationals also activated SS Cristian Guzman (strained left hamstring) and OF Nook Logan (sprained left foot) and sent OF Michael Restovich to Triple-A Columbus after the game.

Cruz was eligible to come off the DL on Sunday. … OF Jeff DaVanon, who missed the first month with a shoulder injury, has been swinging the bat well and could be sent to extended spring training May 10, manager Bob Melvin said. If it goes well, DaVanon might rejoin the Diamondbacks by June 1. … Melvin said he called utility player Alberto Callaspo into his office for a pep talk Saturday night. The rookie has fielded well, but he entered Sunday hitting .188 with a .244 on-base percentage and may have been worried about being demoted. Melvin said he hoped “to let him know he’s one of our guys. He ain’t going anywhere.” Callaspo went 2-for-4 with a single and a double Sunday.

ladelphia general manager Pat Gillick said in the clubhouse, before his team concluded a four-game series against the Giants. “He has a contusion on his leg. They have him iced down. There’s no fracture of any kind. We’ll all have to wait.” Gillick said the Phillies might know more later Sunday but perhaps not until Monday. “This is the kind of thing that could get sore and stiffen up overnight, so we have to keep tabs on that,” Gillick said. If Garcia is not able to go, Gillick said it would be up to manager Charlie Manuel and pitching coach Rich Dubee to select a starter. … Manuel knows that Ryan Howard’s tender left quadriceps muscle is affecting the slugger at the plate, though Howard hit a two-run homer in the third inning. The manager wants his star player to relax a little bit. “Basically what I see is that he’s been trying too hard,” Manuel said. “I know this, if your back leg is hurting it can be hard to push off. I think his biggest struggle right now is mental.” Manuel would consider sitting Howard down if the pain in his leg becomes too difficult to play through in the coming weeks.
SAN FRANCISCO: Barry Bonds had the night off a day after hitting his 744th career home run, so the spotlight was on right-hander Tim Lincecum for his major league debut. … CF Dave Roberts also had the night off, a good thing for his tender left elbow on his throwing arm. Todd Linden, who like Lincecum is a former University of Washington player, started in center and Pedro Feliz moved from third to left to fill in Bonds’ spot. Kevin Frandsen played 3B. … Manager Bruce Bochy is pleased with SS Omar Vizquel’s batting since moving him down in the order for several games. Vizquel was back up in the No. 2 hole Sunday night. “It looks like he’s seeing the ball better and making better contact,” Bochy said.
