ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) -The Texas Rangers designated left-hander Bruce Chen for assignment Saturday and purchased right-hander Willie Eyre’s contract from Triple-A Oklahoma.
Chen has no record and a 7.20 ERA in 10 innings over five relief appearances this season. He gave up four earned runs in four innings during Friday’s 16-4 loss to Oakland. The Rangers have 10 days to trade, waive or reassign Chen.
“We used our bullpen for eight innings last night, so we had to get a fresh arm in here,” manager Ron Washington said.
Eyre, who spent all of 2006 with the Minnesota Twins, pitched 7 1-3 scoreless innings at Oklahoma.
