CINCINNATI (AP) -Infielder Enrique Cruz was called up Friday by the Cincinnati Reds, who need someone to fill in while shortstop Alex Gonzalez is on bereavement leave.
Cruz, 25, was assigned to Double-A Chattanooga after he appeared in eight games for the Reds during spring training. It will be Cruz’s second stint in the majors – he appeared in 60 games for Milwaukee in 2003, starting at shortstop.
Cruz was playing third base for Chattanooga, where he hit .350 in five games.
Gonzalez left the team on Thursday to attend to a family matter in Venezuela. He can stay on the bereavement list for up to a week.
In order to add Cruz to their 40-man roster, the Reds transferred outfielder Chris Denorfia to the 60-day disabled list. Denorfia tore a ligament in his elbow while making a throw during spring training and needed reconstructive surgery.
