CINCINNATI (AP) -The Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday recalled relief pitcher Todd Coffey from Triple-A Louisville and placed reliever Jared Burton on the 15-day disabled list with back spasms.
The Reds also activated right-hander Elizardo Ramirez from the disabled list and optioned him to Louisville, where he was scheduled to start Tuesday night.
Coffey, 26, has been optioned twice to Louisville in the last three weeks. The right-hander pitched twice in last week’s series at St. Louis before returning to Louisville last Friday to make room for rookie starter Homer Bailey.
This is the second trip to the disabled list for Burton, 26, acquired from Oakland in December’s winter-meeting Rule 5 draft of unprotected players. The Reds have to keep the right-hander on their 25-man roster or DL this season, or must offer him back to the Athletics for $25,000.
Ramirez, 24, broke into the Reds’ starting rotation last season before being sidelined by shoulder problems.
