MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer was a late scratch from the lineup Saturday night because of a sore left quadriceps muscle.
The change was made after the team finished batting practice, about 1 1/2 hours before the game against the Boston Red Sox. Mike Redmond replaced Mauer both behind the plate and in the third spot in the order.
He told manager Ron Gardenhire he could come into the game to catch, but he was too stiff and sore to run. Mauer will have a precautionary MRI test done on his leg Sunday and probably won’t play – with a break in the schedule on Monday.
Mauer, the reigning AL batting champion, had appeared in 28 of Minnesota’s first 29 games. He was the designated hitter on Friday night, going 1-for-3 with a double to drop his average to .353. Mauer began the day ranked fourth in the league in batting.
He said he’s had the injury for a few weeks, but it wasn’t until running the bases in Friday night’s game against Boston that it started to really bother him.
