KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) -Texas Rangers outfielder Brad Wilkerson left Tuesday night’s game against Tampa Bay in the fifth inning after injuring his right hamstring when he slid awkwardly to avoid a tag at second base.
Rangers manager Ron Washington said it appears Wilkerson pulled the hamstring. He won’t be available Wednesday, and could wind up on the disabled list.
“It’s not good,” Washington said after Texas lost 4-3 to the Devil Rays in 10 innings.
Wilkerson, who had doubled, twisted his upper body to avoid the tag by second baseman Ty Wigginton and started his slide late. He walked off the field after being examined by a trainer and talking to Washington.
Should Wilkerson be out for an extended period, options include calling up outfielder Marlon Byrd from the minors or activating outfielder Frank Catalanotto from the disabled list.
The Rangers decided not to activate Catalanotto, sidelined by a right biceps injury, from the DL before Tuesday’s game. He was scheduled to play four games starting Thursday with Triple-A Oklahoma.
