WASHINGTON (AP) -The Washington Nationals activated right-hander Jerome Williams from the 15-day disabled list so he could start Tuesday night against the Atlanta Braves – and then he promptly went down with another injury in the third inning.
Williams was removed from the game with a strained rotator cuff. He allowed five runs and seven hits, and did not retire any of the four batters he faced in the third. He said he “felt a pull” during the last pitch he threw.
“My whole arm’s just sore right now,” he said.
Williams had been on the DL because he sprained his left ankle while swinging during an at-bat in his last start, April 28 against the New York Mets. He allowed one run in six innings during a rehab start Thursday for Triple-A Columbus.
Manager Manny Acta said Williams was likely headed back to the DL.
“I don’t know what in the world’s going on right now,” Williams said. “I pitch fine. I go up on the DL, then came off of that – and now this.”
Williams was the losing pitcher in Tuesday’s 6-2 loss. He dropped to 0-5 with a 7.20 ERA.
To make room for Williams, the Nationals optioned outfielder Kory Casto to Columbus on Monday. Casto batted .140 in 54 at-bats with the big league club.
“I just want him to play every day,” Acta said.
