Montoya wins the pole
Juan Pablo Montoya was the fastest in qualifying for the AMP Energy Juice 500 and will start up front for Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race.
After qualifying, Kevin Harvick and Dale Eanhardt Jr. are the favorites to win Sunday’s race according to oddsmakers at the online sports book Sportsbook.com. Both have 11/2 odds to win while Tony Stewart has 15/2 odds to win and Jamie McMurray has 8/1 odds.
Harvick is trailing Jimmie Johnson for the points lead by 62 points and he is 56 points behind Denny Hamlin for second place. Harvick has three wins on the year and at Talladega, he has one win. He has an average finish of 15.5 and a driver rating of 75.3 at this track. Harvick will start 14th on Sunday.
Earnhardt Jr. finished sixth in qualifying. He is out of the Chase for the Championship and hasn’t won a race since 2008, but Junior has seven restrictor plate race wins in his career, including five wins at Talladega.
Stewart is seventh in the point standings with two wins on the year. Stewart has one win at Talladega in his career with an average finish of 14.8 and a driver rating of 89.0. Stewart will start 26th on Sunday.
McMurray is 13th in the standings, outside of the Chase for the Championship. McMurray won the 2009 race at Talladega and he has a 84.4 driver rating at the track. McMurray qualified 12th for Sunday’s race.
