Dale Jr. wins GEICO 500
TALLADEGA, AL (TheSpread) – Dale Earnhardt Jr. picked up a needed victory on Sunday, as he won the 2015 GEICO 500, essentially assuring him a spot in this year’s Chase for the Championship.
Earnhardt started near the front and was in contention throughout the race alongside teammate Jimmie Johnson. The two combined to lead 117 of the 188 laps, with Dale Jr. taking 67 laps as the leader, most of any driver. In the end, Earnhardt Jr. held off his teammate to get the win, which is his first of the season.
According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, Earnhardt Jr. entered the week with 8/1 odds to win this race, which means a wager of $100 on him to prevail will pay out an additional $800.
The win pushes Dale Jr. to fifth in the current standings, 75 points behind Kevin Harvick for the series lead. Martin Truex Jr. bumped up to second in the standings, 40 points behind Harvick, after finishing 5th on Sunday while Joey Logano fell to fourth in the standings after a 33rd-place finish.
