Edwards Flips in Vegas
Carl Edwards is getting a lot of practice with his signature back flip in 2008.
Edwards took his second checkered flag in as many weeks by winning the UAW Dodge 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Edwards won last weekend at California for his first victory of 2008.
Edwards led much of Sunday’s race and was able to easily hold off Hendrick Motorsports driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. in the final laps for the Sin City Victory. Earnhardt Jr.’s second place finish was his best in over 2 years in a points paying Cup Series race. The race was decided by a green/white/checkered finish after Jeff Gordon and Matt Kenseth got together with 5 laps to go.

The Las Vegas cliché’s and caution flags were both flying Sunday in Las Vegas. Edwards’ victory brought to an end a weekend of carnage in Las Vegas. The 2008 UAW Dodge 400 set a Las Vegas Motor Speedway record for a Cup race with an amazing 11 cautions.
The majority of the casualties in Sunday’s race were due not to driver error or track conditions but rather blown right front tires. At least 6 different drivers were forced to retire early from the UAW Dodge 400 due to tire related crashes.
Bettors are no doubt pleased as well with Edwards’ win. Prior to Sunday’s race Edwards was listed as a 6/1 favorite to win the UAW Dodge 400 according to oddsmakers at online sports book Bodog. Bettors who backed Edwards were rewarded with $600 for every $100 wagered.
Unofficially Edwards should leave Las Vegas with the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup points lead. This will be the first time in his Sprint Cup career that he will lead the points standings.
Next week the Cup Series heads to Atlanta Motor Speedway for the Kobalt Tools 500. Carl Edwards will no doubt be one of the favorites of Bodog oddsmakers next week at NASCAR’s fastest track. Edwards has two Sprint Cup Series victories at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
