Gordon wins Talladega pole
TALLADEGA, AL (TheSpread) – Jeff Gordon claimed his 80th career pole position on Saturday, as he won the pole for the GEICO 500 on Sunday from Talladega.
According to oddsmakers at GTBets, Gordon now has 12/1 odds to win this race. Dale Earnhardt Jr. is the favorite with 13/2 odds while Jimmie Johnson has 9/1 odds and Kevin Harvick and Kurt Busch each have 10/1 odds. The GEICO 500 will take place from Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday, May 3 at 1:19PM ET.
Earnhardt Jr. is eighth in the point standings, 86 points out of first place. He is winless on the year with four top 5s. Dale Jr. has five wins at Talladega with an average finish of 15.5 at the track. His driver rating here is 90.7, which is second-best of any driver in the field. He will start fourth on Sunday.
Johnson is fourth in the standings this season, 58 points behind Harvick for first. He has two wins and five top 5s on the year. Johnson is a two-time winner at this track. His average finish here is 17.5 and his driver rating is 87.5, which ranks fifth in today’s race.
Harvick is the points leader this season by 33 on the field. He has two wins and seven top 5s on the year. Harvick has one win and an average finish of 15.6 at Talladega, but his driver rating there is just 78.8.
Busch is 18th in the standings, 135 points out of first. He has one win and three top 5s in just six races. Busch has never won at Talladega, but has an average finish of 17.0 and a driver rating of 88.3 there, which is fourth-best in the field.
