Checker Auto Parts 500
Don’t let the slick talk fool you, Jeff Gordon is nervous. After losing the points lead last week, Jimmie Johnson has his teammate and car owner rattled. Gordon starts ahead of Johnson and 30 points is a reasonable deficit to make up but reality for the former champ may be setting in.
As far as beyond the Hendrick twins goes, there is only one scenario that could possibly see a 2007 NASCAR Nextel Cup Champion other than Jeff Gordon or Jimmie Gordon. What is that scenario you ask? One word sums it up, catastrophe. Unless all hell breaks loose very early in Sunday’s Checker Auto Parts 500 in Phoenix it should be very clear who the new champion will most likely be heading to Homestead-Miami for the season finale.
But enough about championships, there will be plenty of time to talk about that all next week. There is still a race that needs to be run and there is a very good chance that someone other then Johnson or Gordon will be in victory lane on Sunday. That is unless Johnson can prove me wrong for the second week in a row and win his fourth straight. I never say never but…
Here are our top 3 picks for the 2007 Checker Auto Parts 500 from Phoenix International Raceway.
Little Kyle was driving like a man possessed in Saturday’s Busch Series race at Phoenix. It looked like Kyle was driving through cars instead of passing them on the side. Busch has quite a bit of experience at this track since he is from Las Vegas originally.
Desperate for a win in 2007 Dale Jr. could potentially pull it off this weekend at Phoenix where he has won in the past. If his equipment can hold on (cross fingers) and his stand in crew chief can make the correct adjustments on Sunday this will most definitely be his only chance for a win this season. There is no way he wins at Miami next week.
Didn’t I just say, never say never? Call this my insurance pick. I don’t think the guy can win 4 in a row during the Chase but I learned my lesson last week betting against him. Odds aren’t great but I would rather have one winner than 3 losers.
