Jeff Byrd 500 Predictions
(The Spread) – This week NASCAR returns to its roots when it pays a visit to Bristol Motor Speedway for the Jeff Byrd 500.
It’s time for some good ole’ short track racing with a lot of banking thrown in to make things interesting. Of all the tracks on the NASCAR circuit, Bristol might be our favorite since it is usually non-stop action with lots of bumping and rubbing from start to finish. This is a track where some of the favorites tend to struggle (i.e. Jimmie Johnson), while others seem to thrive. Look for drivers who have done well here over the years since it’s a track that you rarely see a long shot win (nevertheless contend).
After looking at the results from practice and qualifying on Friday, the Fords from Jack Rousch Racing continue to look fast out of the box. It appears they have the other teams over a barrel with only Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon looking like they have cars that can keep up with the Fords.
Kyle Busch 5/1
Since switching to the COT car, Kyle Busch has dominated Bristol while winning four races in eight starts. Overall, Busch has always ran well here with nine top-10s in 12 starts, but since the COT was introduced it was then that he has became so dominant here. Winner of three of the last four races at Bristol, we look for him to make it four out of five come Sunday.
Greg Biffle 10/1
Greg Biffle is another driver who has grown to like Bristol since the COT was introduced. He has four top-5s in eight starts, which is significant because before that he was just average here with limited success. Biffle has been fast all year no matter the track, but bad luck has done him in most weeks while keeping him from much better results than his results show. After a great first practice, Biffle followed it up with a great qualifying run and will start on the front row next to his teammate Carl Edwards. If Busch has a bad day we think Biffle could grab his first Bristol win at a nice price.
Live Longshot
Tony Stewart 15/1
Tony Stewart has quietly started the year fast, which is not the norm for him since he has always started off slow only to pick up the pace later. That leads us to believe that he could win a rare early season race at a nice price. While Bristol is not one of his better tracks he has shown over the years that he can run well here and with a hot start, he could surprise the field and win Sunday at a nice price.
