Martin Takes The Pole

The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series held qualifying for Saturday’s Sharpie 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway on Friday, and Mark Martin won his fifth pole of the 2009 season.

Following Friday’s qualifying, Kyle Busch finds himself as the new pre-race favorite to win on Saturday night.

Busch is the favorite with 4/1 odds to win according to oddsmakers at the online sportsbook SBGGLOBAL. The other short odds to win is Martin (5/1), Greg Biffle (7/1), and Jimmie Johnson (8/1).

Busch qualified 15^th for Saturday’s race and sits 15^th in the points standings. With three races left before the Chase for the Championship, Busch needs a strong showing in the Sharpie 500 to keep his hopes for making the top 12 alive. A fourth place finish at Watkins Glen on Aug. 10 has been surrounded by five races where he finished outside the top 10. Busch has three wins on the year, but not placed in the top three since winning the Friedman 400 on May 2.

Martin is a two-time winner at Bristol Motor Speedway and he will lead the way to start the race on Saturday. In his career, Martin has 15 top-five finishes at

Bristol. Martin is currently 12^th in the points standings.

Biffle qualified second for Saturday’s race and is 10^th in the Sprint Cup standings. Biffle has never won in

Bristol but has four top-five finishes.

Johnson will start 21^st for the Sharpie 500 and has never won in

Bristol with three top-five finishes. Johnson is coming off his second worst finish of the 2009 season after taking 33^rd in the Carfax 400 last weekend. Johnson is third in the points standings.
