Pep Boys 500 Preview
As usual there are multiple storylines within the Nextel Cup Series as the drivers prepare to race at NASCAR’s fastest track. The Pep Boys 500 at Atlanta is the seventh race of the Chase for The Nextel Cup and most likely the first race where some Chaser’s will be mathematically eliminated from the 2007 title at the conclusion of the race today.
The big story of the week that just won’t seem to go away is the battle within Roush Racing between
Carl Edwards and
Matt Kenseth. The extra media attention their little scuffle last week after the race at Martinsville is great news for
Jimmie Johnson and
Jeff Gordon who are flying under the radar headings into the final stretch of the Chase. Good runs for them today at Atlanta will almost certainly make it a two man race heading into the Chase’s final three races at Texas, Phoenix and Homestead-Miami.
Last week at Martinsville we gave you the race winner in Jimmie Johnson +450. Those of you who played along enjoyed a $450 payout for every $100 bet on Johnson. Our other pick, Jeff Gordon finished the race 3rd so all in all a good week.
Gotta play your hot hands and Johnson is definitely hot. He and his team have absolutely no problem putting together multiple race wins. Johnson runs well at Atlanta (shocker) and was fast in final practice.
I almost don’t want to make this pick due to the motor problems DEI has had this season. But there is too much history at Atlanta for
Dale Jr. to pass up a 12/1 payout. Dale is starting out front and if his equipment can hold together I think he can run up front and challenge for the win.
This is kind of a long shot and may not warrant a full unit pick but
Kahne was fast in final practice and does his best driving on these types of tracks. Dodge really needs a win before the end of the season to build momentum for 2008 and if Kahne can be patient and make the correct adjustments throughout the day he may be able to get back to victory lane.
