Harvick wins, advances in Chase
Kevin Harvick needed a win on Sunday to keep his title hopes alive, and that is just what he got, claiming the victory in the AAA 400.
Harvick started the day in 15th place in the standings and virtually needing a win to advance to the second stage of the Chase. He had a dominant car all day and ended up in the lead when all was said and done, getting his third win of the season. Harvick’s win automatically advances him in to the next stage of the Chase, which features the top 12 drivers over the next three races.
According to oddsmakers, Harvick had 5/1 odds to win Sunday’s race, which means that a $100 wager on him to prevail will pay out an additional $500.
It was a rough day for Jimmie Johnson, who had car issues and finished 41st, which dropped him all the way to 14th in the standings. He has now been eliminated from the Chase along with Jamie McMurray, Paul Menard and Clint Bowyer. McMurray finished tied for the cut on points with Dale Earnhardt Jr., but Dale Jr. won the tiebreaker by finishing third on Sunday to McMurray’s fourth-place finish.
