2007 Subway 500 Preview
With Jeff Gordon securely on the pole for the 2007 Subway 500 at Martinsville Speedway in Virginia, you have to wonder if the other competitors in the Chase for the Nextel Cup have given up hope. Gordon has won the last two races in a row at Charlotte and Talladega and Martinsville is historically one of his best tracks.
He has won at Martinsville 7 times and has only finished outside of the top 10 in 6 of the 29 races he has run here in his Cup career. Gordon is one of only three current Nextel Cup In 6 of the last 9 races her Gordon has either won or finished second. Winning at Martinsville drivers with more than one win here.
Short of a catastrophe, it looks very unlikely that Gordon would leave Virginia without extending his points lead over Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson. A significant setback for either Johnson or Clint Bowyer all but closes the door on their chances to upset Gordon with only 4 races remaining before the season finale at Homestead Miami Speedway.
While nothing will be official for another week or so, the chance is all but gone already for drivers 7 through 12 in the Chase standings. There are only a handful of likely scenarios that could propel Kurt Busch, Kevin Harvick, Denny Hamlin, Jeff Burton, Martin Truex Jr. or Matt Kenseth to the 2007 NASCAR Nextel Cup Title.
All indications are it will be a three man sprint (no pun intended) to the finish. This week our money is on the two leaders.
Take Jeff Gordon (+450) Gordon has an average finish of 12.3 in 29 career starts at Martinsville. It’s tough to navigate traffic here and it’s a long day so starting out front is crucial. Gordon grabs the pole for Sunday’s race, this is a no brainer.
Take Jimmie Johnson (+450) Jimmie Johnson is no slouch either at Martinsville. Johnson is the winner of the last two Martinsville races and his career stats here will no doubt eclipse Gordon in a few years. In the last 10 races here Johnson’s worst finish was a respectable fourth.
