TULSA, Okla. (AP) Two-time Chili Bowl winner Rico Abreu returned from a 15-week break to win his heat and advance to Saturday night’s main event.
Abreu had not raced since September because of injuries he suffered in a race at Eldora Speedway. Back in action Wednesday night on the second night of the Chili Bowl Nationals, Abreu swept all three of his races and earned the automatic berth into the 55-lap feature at the Tulsa Expo Center.
Abreu joined friend Kyle Larson in advancing to the Super Bowl of Midget Racing. Larson won his race Tuesday night, and drivers in Toyotas have won the first two nights at the Chili Bowl.
The top three finishers each night earn automatic berths into Saturday’s race. Joining Abreu in advancing were Tyler Thomas and Kevin Thomas Jr. Larson, Brad Sweet and Tyler Courtney advanced through Tuesday night preliminaries.
The Chili Bowl features more than 350 entries racing for one of the 24 openings in Saturday night’s feature. There were 85 drivers in Wednesday’s qualifying sessions, and the number of cars that have flipped had reached 34 by the end of Wednesday night. There have been no reported injuries.
