DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (AP) – The 24 Hours at Daytona is under way, with Chip Ganassi’s star-studded teams trying to take the owner back to Victory Lane in the prestigious, twice-around-the-clock endurance race.
Jorg Bergmeister, driving for Flying Lizard Motorsports, started from the pole and led the 18-car field to the green flag in the Daytona Prototype class.
Ganassi’s two cars were close behind with Scott Pruett and Scott Dixon driving the first stints. Those teams also include NASCAR stars Juan Pablo Montoya and Jamie McMurray, as well as open-wheel drivers Dario Franchitti and Graham Rahal.
Pruett has won the DP class a record three times, but finished second last year when an upstart team anchored by Joao Barbosa and Terry Borcheller pulled off a surprising victory.
Dominik Fambacher led the GT class to the green flag Saturday, but Robin Liddell took the lead a short time later.
