INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Former Indianapolis 500 champion Buddy Rice is returning to the Brickyard with Panther Racing.
Rice has signed to drive Panther Racing’s second car, joining rookie JR Hildebrand for the May 29 race.
The 2004 Indy 500 champion with Rahal-Letterman Racing, Rice hasn’t raced in IndyCar in two years. The 35-year-old last raced a full season in IndyCar with Dreyer & Reinbold in 2008 and has been driving Grand-Am cars while running a go-kart team.
Rice and Sam Hornish Jr., now driving in NASCAR, are the only two Americans to win the Indy 500 since 2000.
