FONTANA, Calif. (AP) – President Mike Helton still supports NASCAR’s appeals process after its chief appellate officer surprisingly rescinded most of the heavy penalties levied against five-time champion crew chief Chad Knaus.
Helton staunchly defended chief appellate officer John Middlebrook on Friday at Auto Club Speedway.
Without revealing his own opinion on the case, Helton supported Middlebrook’s decision Tuesday overturning Knaus’ six-race suspension and restoring 25 points to driver Jimmie Johnson after their car failed opening day inspection at the Daytona 500.
The decision confused many racing fans because Knaus’ $100,000 fine wasn’t rescinded. Helton also says he thinks Johnson’s car would fail inspection again at a future race if it had the same modified sheet metal between the roof and the side windows that resulted in the violation.
