Kawhi Leonard finished Sunday’s 115-110 win over the Suns with 38 points (13-of-24 FGs, 9-of-10 FTs), five rebounds, five assists, one steal, one block, and three 3-pointers in 42 minutes. The 42 minutes are the most Leonard has played in a game this season, and more efforts of this variety may be needed with Paul George (knee) sidelined. However, the extra attention from the Suns didn’t do much to slow down the Klaw, who scored at an efficient clip and set up teammates for crucial shots down the stretch. Eric Gordon (19/1/2 with three 3-pointers) was on the receiving end of a Leonard pass with 1:33 remaining, and his triple extended the Clippers’ lead to six at the time. Leonard’s offensive masterpiece also helped make up for Russell Westbrook (9/10/8/2/3 with one 3-pointer) shooting 3-of-19 from the field, but that didn’t tell the whole story for Russ. He kept multiple possessions alive late with his work on the offensive glass, and a rejection of a Devin Booker layup attempt with 10 seconds preserved LA’s three-point lead. Game 2 is scheduled for Tuesday night in Phoenix.

Kevin Durant shot 7-of-15 from the field and 10-of-10 from the foul line in Sunday’s 115-110 loss to the Clippers, accounting for 27 points, nine rebounds, 11 assists, one steal, two blocks, and three 3-pointers in 45 minutes. Durant’s Suns’ playoff debut didn’t result in a win, but that had more to do with the Clippers’ reserves outperforming their Suns’ counterparts than KD. He finished the game one rebound shy of a triple-double while committing just one turnover. While Devin Booker (one rebound, three assists, four steals, and three blocked shots) scored 26 on 10-of-19 shooting from the field and 6-of-8 from the foul line, he was also responsible for five of the Suns’ 10 turnovers on the night. No other Suns player had more than one. There were some signs that the team is still working out its chemistry with Durant on the court, most notably Booker’s hesitation to make a play on the Suns’ penultimate possession before being told to go by his star teammate. With Game 2 scheduled for Tuesday, Monday’s work will be important for the Suns, lest they fall into an 0-2 hole.
