Lauri Markkanen went ballistic in Thursday’s win over Houston, racking up a career-high 49 points to go with eight rebounds, an assist and a block. Lauri was a true “Markksman” in this one, hitting 15-of-27 shots, 6-of-15 triples and all 13 of his free-throw attempts on his way to the best offensive performance of his young career. Markkanen breezed past his career-high of 38 – set twice this season – and seven of the top scoring games of his career have come in 2022-23. The Finnish big took a small step in reviving his career while playing SF in Cleveland last season, but his trade to Utah was a monumental leap forward. Markkanen has 10 30-point games under his belt, and the “tanking” Jazz are just one game below .500 in a very competitive Western Conference thanks to his tremendous play. He’s averaging 23.9 points, 8.5 boards, 1.9 dimes and 3.0 triples while shooting 52.8% from the floor and 42.1% from deep – all career-best marks. He’s a lock for Most Improved Player if he keeps this up, and he’ll also collect some hardware as fantasy basketball’s biggest draft day steal.

Nikola Vucevic played 36 minutes in Friday’s 126-112 win over the 76ers, tallying 19 points (8-of-14 FGs, 1-of-1 FTs), 18 rebounds, 10 assists, two blocks, and two 3-pointers. With Philadelphia again without the injured Joel Embiid, Vucevic took full advantage. He dominated the defensive glass and the triple-double since May 7, 2021, against the Celtics. With Vucevic sharing the court with ball-dominant scorers Zach LaVine and DeMar DeRozan, there are stretches in which he doesn’t get the ball as much as he should. But the veteran center can provide value in other ways, as we saw Friday night. Also playing well in the frontcourt was Patrick Williams, who finished Friday’s win with 18 points, six rebounds, two assists, and two 3-pointers in 34 minutes. With Javonte Green (knee) sidelined, the Bulls needed more production from Williams, and he came through in Philadelphia.
