Mavericks coach Jason Kidd said Saturday that Spencer Dinwiddie will return to the reserve role he filled last season. Many assumed that Dinwiddie would move into the starting lineup this season, filling the void left by Jalen Brunson. But that will not be the case, with Kidd revealing on Saturday that the veteran guard will anchor the second unit. “Right now we are looking at Spencer running that (second) group, I thought he did a good job with that group yesterday… being able to set the table for those guys,” Kidd said. Christian Wood, Maxi Kleber, and Tim Hardaway Jr. will also be part of that second unit. Kidd’s decision shouldn’t negatively impact Dinwiddie’s fantasy value; getting to run a group when Luka Doncic is resting could enhance his value. As for the starting guard slot next to Luka Doncic, Josh Green, Frank Ntilikina, and Jaden Hardy appear to be in the mix.

Duane Washington got the start on Wednesday when the Suns rested all of their regulars and went off for a game-high 31 points, two rebounds, four assists, three steals and a 3-pointer on 10-of-19 shooting in 39 minutes. He showed flashes of this with the Pacers last year and might end up serving as a backup to both Mikal Bridges and Devin Booker. He’s not worth drafting in fantasy leagues but if the Suns suffer some backcourt injuries, it’s not unreasonable to think that Washington could end up being worth a look on the waiver wire at some point this season.
