CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -The Charlotte Bobcats have had preliminary talks with Rod Higgins about becoming general manager, a move that would reunite him with former boss Michael Jordan.
Bobcats spokesman B.J. Evans said Tuesday the discussions are ongoing. Over the weekend, Golden State granted the Bobcats permission to speak to Higgins, who has served as the Warriors’ GM for the past three seasons. Higgins reports to Golden State vice president of basketball operations Chris Mullin.
Higgins was assistant GM with the Washington Wizards from 2000-2003, when Jordan was the team’s president of basketball operations. Higgins also played in Chicago during Jordan’s rookie season with the Bulls in 1984-85.
Jordan became a part-owner of the Bobcats last June and took the final say on all basketball decisions away from coach and general manager Bernie Bickerstaff.
Bickerstaff stepped down as coach at the end of the season. He’s staying with team as an executive vice president and will essentially be Jordan’s top aide.
But the Bobcats are looking to fill the role of assistant GM Karl Hicks, who took a job this spring with the Atlantic Coast Conference.
Jordan has quickly brought in former friends and teammates to Charlotte. Longtime confidant Fred Whitfield is now team president of the Bobcats. Jordan’s former Chicago teammate Sam Vincent was hired as coach last week.
The 47-year-old Higgins spent 13 seasons in the NBA as a player. He also spent six seasons as an assistant coach with the Warriors.
