HOUSTON (AP) -The Houston Rockets were without both Tracy McGrady and Yao Ming against Portland on Friday night because of back problems.
McGrady, who missed eight games earlier this season due to back spasms and soreness, left Wednesday’s game against Golden State with a stiff lower back and was listed as day-to-day.
Yao, out with what team officials called a sore lower back, wasn’t sure when he was injured but thinks someone may have hit his back against Golden State.
“Today in the shootaround when I started full speed running, I felt it in my back,” he said.
Yao said he spoke to team trainer Keith Jones and he suggested he take a day off. However, Yao said he there was some concern in his mind that he might also miss Sunday’s game at Sacramento.
Instead of sitting down for interviews with the media Friday, the 7-foot-6 center stood because he said sitting was painful to his back. He said he isn’t sure of the exact nature of his problem.
Yao has had four 30-point games since returning on March 5 after missing 32 games with a broken leg.
